Case Studies

CASE STUDY: An 1850s house In Kent

Renovating a period home can often call for some degree of compromise: particularly when Audio Visual technology is concerned. We have become so used to the home comforts of a TV and audio system that to integrate them into a period room, which still maintains its integrity, demands trade-offs on all sides.

But in this particular 1850s house in Kent, the owners refused to accept this. Their vision was to have the latest technology at their fingertips. The idea of a dedicated cinema room was appealing, but devoting a whole room for this was not practical. The obvious solution was the lounge, however they wanted to keep this as a traditional space where they could just read. They also wanted to lose the unsightly cables and speakers – including the Audio Visual paraphernalia: Satellite boxes, amps, DVD player/recorder, CD player, and of course the extra that would come with the cinema setup – screen, sub-woofer and 5 surround sound speakers…

The Solution

Conceal a 50-inch plasma, cinema screen, projector, surround sound speakers and blackout binds in a 1850s room that would be a fully functional home cinema, and at the touch of a button revert back to period without ANY evidence of technology – all in 60 seconds.

Mount Amina’s Invisible Plaster In-wall Loudspeakers within a plasterboard opening or in a ceiling, skim over with 1-2mm plaster skim, let the plaster dry, decorate and the speakers become invisible.

Craft the panelling, traditional coving, period fireplaces, as well as orchestrating the lighting by Ilight UK, soft furnishings and the décor in such a way that the room appeared to be untouched by modern day life.

Make best use of space by installing the plasma and projector screen on the same wall of the room.

Source an acoustically transparent screen from Screen Excellence. This type of screen allows the sound to penetrate through the material. It also produces the sensation of the dialogue coming directly from the mouths of the actors.
